How participatory are you during sessions?

In my coaching practice, I focus on building our relationships and fostering ongoing growth, which I call "developing development." By development, I mean continuously finding new ways to respond to familiar situations. These responses might involve adopting a new perspective, changing how we interact with others, or fundamentally altering how we live and shape our world. As the coach, my role is to create a space where everyone can contribute and collaborate, including my own relationship with the group. During our sessions, we engage in activities like listening, sharing, and improvising new things together. This approach is called social therapeutic coaching. My involvement in each session varies. Sometimes, I may simply ask questions, while other times I might share my own experiences or offer personal insights if it helps individuals or the group progress and develop. Very often, I will invite the group to improvise or try a new creative "performance".

From your perspective, what is coaching?

Coaching is partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires people to thrive in their personal and professional life. I practice Social Therapeutic coaching, a creative and non-diagnostic approach to mental wellness. I see people as active creators and influencers of their own lives and culture. I help each person envision themselves as the person they aspire to become, leading their lives with confidence, resilience and possibilities. It's about empowering individuals to stand "a head taller" and become leaders of their own journeys. In Social Therapeutic group coaching, I help people collaborate to develop the conditions and tools they need to cope and thrive, regardless of their diagnosis and life circumstances. In these sessions, everyone is encouraged to contribute to the group's growth, including their relationship with the group and me. Together, we create a supportive environment where we can experiment, learn, and take risks.

Are there any philosophies or values that inform your work that I should know about?

I practice a unique and practical approach inspired by Social Therapeutics, the expressive arts, and Buddhist philosophy. Social Therapeutics, developed by the East Side Institute in the 1990s, focuses on the principle of "becoming." This means recognizing that as humans, we are both social and creative beings. We shape our own development, and our development is influenced by others. My approach begins with the belief that creativity is therapeutic and helps us grow. I use the expressive arts (theater/improv, poetry, movement, music, drawing/collage) to infuse and improvise our sessions and conversations. Through the process, participants can reshape their lives, emotions, and pains. Together, we refuel our desire to create, live, and connect as humans, bringing joy into our lives. In Buddhism, joy is central. It comes from seeing life's challenges as opportunities to grow, develop resilience, wisdom, and determination, ultimately striving for the happiness of ourselves and others. We are not just passive recipients of culture; we actively create and perform our lives, communities, and the world around us. Together, we develop our capacity to approach the unknown as an opportunity to connect, innovate and transform.

From your perspective, what is therapy?

Therapy can be seen in different ways. One way is through a diagnostic lens, where you seek help when you feel "sick" or not "normal" and try to understand the psychological roots of one's problems and the patterns associated with it and how to cope/adapt to our lives. There are other therapeutic approaches who are more cultural, philosophical and focused on emotional development. The question is less how to adapt to the world but more what do you want to create and become in the world.
