Sean Kensing, Recovery & Life Coach

“I feel a sense of safety and security with Sean. He has a way of making it easy to talk about difficult things. I never felt judged or disrespected by him, and that has allowed me to go into areas of my experience that I normally wouldn’t want to touch.” — Client testimonial

I have 10 years of experience working with people experiencing addiction and with family members affected by a loved ones’ experience with addiction.

I work with people on a wide range of issues. The following are a few of my specialties (this list is not all-inclusive):

  • Substance Use Disorders

  • Gambling Disorders

  • Anxiety

  • Existential crisis

  • Grief

  • Creative Blocks

Are there any philosophies or values that inform your work that I should know about?

My work is most strongly informed by Carl Rogers’ “person-centered” approach. Carl Rogers was a psychologist whose approach was grounded in a positive view of human potential; he believed that humans are complex and tend to move towards fulfillment of their potential if provided with the right environment in which to grow (note the italics!). Rogers believed that when clients are made to feel comfortable, safe, and truly heard and understood, psychological growth will almost inevitably occur. Rogers believed that the relationship itself was the main healing factor. I believe strongly in this approach because I have experienced it both as a client and as a professional coach.

I am also influenced by existential philosophy and art and by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross’ work on grief. If you are interested, I invite you to take a look at my website to see some more about specific books that have influenced my life and my approach to coaching.
