I have particular experience helping individuals work through obstacles like:
If I have never been to therapy before, what should I expect? How do I know if I should go, and how do I start?
If you are thinking about it, you’d probably benefit from it, as long as you find a therapist you are truly comfortable with. Not all therapy is about solving a huge problems or managing a crisis (although it can be that too); sometimes therapy can just be about having an objective listener or soliciting feedback.
Initially therapy can be scary, especially for someone who has never experienced it before. I can’t tell you how many people have shared about being nervous at their first session. It might be helpful to think about it like a first date. You are going to decide if this new therapist is a good fit, if you have good chemistry, if they “get you.” And like first dates, sometimes it takes a few “dates” to know if it’s right. Just know that you have the right to feel safe and comfortable, while still being challenged!
