Get to Know Jade

If I have never been to therapy before, what should I expect? How do I know if I should go, and how do I start?

If you are interested in starting therapy I would schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation with you. I will ask you questions that include what are your current concerns that you want to discuss and explore, goals you want to achieve, and answer any questions you might have about the therapy process. If you feel you connect with me then we will schedule our first 50-minute therapy session. I always like to tell any potential client that we are on this journey together, so where do you want to take me first? I like to make sure that each one of my clients feel at ease, comfortable, valued, heard, and informed on any therapeutic approach I may apply to their session. I also provide normalization, validation, and empathy to my clients to make sure they feel they matter, and I respond openly and honestly to any question to may have.

Do you have experience (5-10 years+) working with any types of obstacles or people in particular?

I have a great deal of experience working with individuals who are struggling with body images concerns, eating disorders, abuse (sexual, emotional, mental, and physical), trauma, relationship concerns, infidelity, infertility, attachment theory, depression, anxiety, life transitions, and grief.

How much do you share about yourself during our time together and why?

I share very little about myself. The therapeutic process and therapeutic relationship is a unique one, and so each session will only be about you. However, if I feel a little self disclosure will add therapeutic value to you, then I will.

Where did you work before going into private practice?

I have two Master's Degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy and School Counseling, but prior to that I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Communications (Marketing Communications/Journalism) and worked in the Marketing Communications Departments of private educational institutions where I was also a magazine writer and interviewed various people to help tell their life stories and achievements. I realized that telling a person's life story wasn't enough for me, and I decided that I wanted to help people on their life journey. I've taken the listening and interviewing skills I've gained in my previous work and have applied them to my work as a therapist.

What is the best part of the work for you?

Being a therapist is incredibly rewarding. Seeing my clients utilize any skills and techniques I've given them and to achieve their goals and continue down their journey to a positive and healthier lifestyle is truly amazing. I love when clients report back to me that they feel better, have improved in certain areas they were once concerned about, achieved other goals, and so much more. I make sure in each session that all my clients feel heard and valued, and seeing each of them heal from wounds, disorders, toxic relationships, and other emotional/psychological/relational pain is very rewarding because it reminds me that I helped make a difference in each client's life.

How long should I commit to being in therapy, at least in the beginning?

I like any client I work with to start off once a week with me to help build rapport between therapist and client. However, I'm a believer that something is better than nothing, so if a client can't afford to begin weekly services then I will offer biweekly (every other week). This will depend on each individual need.

What led you to become a mental healthcare practitioner?

My goal in the profession of being a mental health practitioner has always been to help end the stigma, educate others about mental health, show empathy and support to those with mental illness, and express that your mental health is just as equally important as your physical health.

From your perspective, what is therapy?

Therapy is the process of meeting with your therapist to discuss and resolve any problems and concerns you might be having, for example in the the areas of behavior, relationships, beliefs/thoughts, and feelings. No one can tell you exactly what your therapy process will be like because every person's session is different and designed to fit their needs. What I can tell you is that therapy (through the use of setting goals and determining steps to reach them) can help change destructive and/or negative behaviors/habits/thoughts, decrease anxiety and depression, resolve painful emotions, improve relationships, and so much more.
