Jillian Adler, LMSW

Message from Jillian

Welcome! My name is Jillian Adler, and I am a licensed psychotherapist based in New York City. My therapeutic style is non-judgmental, caring, direct, and light-hearted. I believe compassion, rather than critique, is necessary in order to make positive changes, and that principle guides my work. I am passionate about working with individuals to overcome obstacles, meet their goals, and ultimately lead the life they envision for themselves. I have experience working with eating disorders, depression, anxiety, gender dysphoria, sexual identity, life transitions, romantic relationships, and general life stressors. I hold a masters degree from New York University and a B.A. from George Washington University.

Have you received any particular training beyond your post-Bachelor's training?

I have received training in eating disorders at the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy

How participatory are you during sessions?

This ranges from client to client. If a client needs more engagement in order to open up, I am happy to be a more active therapist. If the client needs to do more self-exploration, I will also be happy to take a less participatory role. While it ranges from client to client, it also ranges from session to session. Ultimately, it is based on how the client would most benefit.

How much do you share about yourself during our time together and why?

I prefer not to share too much about myself, unless I find it would be helpful to the client. It is the client's time to work on themselves, and I would never want to take away from that time by sharing information about myself that isn't necessary. However, I have to recognize that the bond between the therapist and client is critical for the work, so if I find it helpful for building a therapeutic alliance, I will share.

How will our relationship be different than relationships I have with friends/loved ones?

Our relationship will be different than relationships with your friends/loved ones because I will never judge you for your choices, get sick of hearing about your problems, and I will try to never bring my own biases into the room. It is your time to talk about YOU and to receive help with your issues unapologetically. Additionally, I am a trained mental health practitioner who will use specific tools and techniques to help benefit you.

From your perspective, what is therapy?

Therapy is a way for individuals to build self-esteem, overcome obstacles, and realize what they want in this world. It is, then, a way for them to figure out how to achieve what they want. Additionally, it is a place where people can come on a tough day and know they will not be judged or ridiculed. Instead, it is an unconditionally kind and safe space meant to whole-heartedly benefit the client.
