Going to therapy for the first time can be intimidating, and even feel a bit confrontational. People sometimes expect that they will have to share every deep, buried secret at the first session! This is not the case. It is what you make it out to be. I am there to listen, and I will not judge what you do or don't say. I think everyone should consider therapy. You don't need to have a formal diagnosis or a life or death problem to come to therapy. It is often helpful to have an objective, unbiased person to listen to what you're going through, and to work with you to identify your needs, your strengths and your ability to work through life's challenges. The first step is reaching out, setting up a consultation and taking it from there.
I most recently worked as a school-based social worker at an elementary school on the Lower East Side. I did individual and group counseling for children dealing with homelessness, foster care, and poverty. Before that, I worked at Children's Aid in Midtown where I conducted home visits for my clients in the Bronx. I assessed their safety, as well as their children's. I connected them to important resources and entitlements, I helped them mitigate immediate stressors, I worked with them to identify personal goals and to achieve them. I have also worked as a job coach for adults on the autism spectrum. I have worked with very diverse groups, in a range of settings. I feel my previous experiences have taught and enabled me to be a well-rounded clinician.
I cater my therapy to my client's specific needs, so my level of participation varies on what I feel will serve my client best. If my client takes their time to open up, I might ask more questions. If my client is an open book, I may be more of a listener. I want to create the space for my client to be comfortable, and to feel I am supporting them in a way that promotes change, growth and resilience.
