Verified background check
I have more than 16 years of experience as a therapist, treating individuals and couples. My clientele consists of people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship stress, infidelity, co-dependency, the challenges of dating, substance use issues...just to name a few. My approach is warm, relational and participatory. I like to get right to the heart of the matter, while figuring out and respecting your pace and comfort level. Our minds are the lens through which we view the world. Just as we aim to take care of our physical health, our mental and emotional health also deserve time and energy. I believe in incorporating multiple approaches in my practice, from the more traditional psychoanalytic therapy to my own creative methods. The goal is to create an individualized plan, customized to help you achieve the desired outcome, or simply to exist more happily! Whether dealing with an acute issue, a desire to improve your emotional intelligence, or a need for objective but invested feedback on issues that are interfering with your sense of well being, therapy can be a profound tool to improve your life, at any time. Please contact me to set up a complimentary 15 minute phone consultation. You can also go to my practice website, Gentle Health Psychotherapy at www.ghpnyc.com. I look forward to hearing from you!

Extremely. Most clients are looking for an objective take on the issues that bring them to therapy. This is precisely what differentiates the therapeutic relationship from other relationships in the client's lives. The traditional silent therapist that only responds with more questions is a thing of the past. Typically, a session is a conversation, not a monologue. Of course, it's important that the clients themselves come to understand things and have realizations at their own pace, which I am extremely sensitive to. But, we are spending a short and valuable amount of time together and I like to get things done!
The best part is also the part that I am the most humble about. It's having the privilege of going on a journey of self discovery with you. I know that there is a certain intimacy involved in letting someone enter your innermost thoughts. I don't take that lightly! Letting you lead the way, I'll offer insight or an objective opinion...but the real work comes from you. Being this sort of 'tour guide' is my greatest joy.
Short answer: the most important relationship that you will ever have in your life is the one with yourself.
In traditional psychoanalysis (think laying on a couch, oftentimes with the therapist behind you and out of sight), sharing was frowned upon, if not out of the question. In my view, this doesn't make for the best therapeutic relationship. There can be a natural curiosity on the part of the client when sharing such intimate details of their lives with me. It's not so much about my own self-disclosure as a willingness to acknowledge that we are two human beings! So, to a degree, I believe in sharing experiences when I can sense the client's desire to hear something that may normalize or validate their experience. Of course, the time we spend in therapy belongs to and is all about the client. Bottom line, sharing is situational, based on my discretion and of course, the client's welcome feedback.
