Message from Desiree

Hi, I'm Desiree! A born and raised New Yorker devoted to helping creatives, healthcare professionals, students, activists, the LGBTQ+ community, HSPs/Highly Sensitive People and small business owners overcome overwhelm in order to excel personally, professionally and creatively. I often work with emerging adults, 18+ through 20-30 somethings, looking to empower themselves through optimized health, self-care, confidence and financial independence. Leaving the nest, whether its your family home or first job, can be intimidating causing you to question what you're capable of. I specialize in helping adults heal from anxiety, depression and complex trauma using a holistic health lens and social justice framework, taking into account all of your nuances, including biology, community, environment, spirituality and anything else that feels important to incorporate into our work. I will be utilizing multiple evidence-based psychotherapy practices, though in session it will often feel similar to chatting with a supportive friend, with stronger boundaries. What you say in session is confidential, and you will be met with unconditional acceptance regardless of the topic of the day. We will unpack deep emotional issues gradually and empathically as I help you practice self-compassion while you try out new ways of living and interacting with your world. As my client, you will have access to me via email, phone and text for check-ins when needed, as well as my VIP Client Resource Library packed with worksheets, journal prompts and other mental health tips for you to explore. I can't wait to get started!

V.S, Client

Where did you work before going into private practice?

I spent the first 8 years of my career working in community mental health on multi-disciplinary teams, directing programs for adults with severe and persistent mental health conditions. I am grateful for the opportunities I was afforded to witness remarkable resilience in my clients and colleagues.

Please share 2-3 anonymized examples of how the work can play out and/or look in the room so that I can form a visual or narrative of what to expect.

What I do best is help people realize the ways they've been denying themselves a fulfilling life. It is a privilege being able to support individuals with incredible empathy and sensitivity that is instead showing up as anxiety, depression and overwhelm. Together, we will get those superpowers to serve you rather than leaving you feeling burnt out. Let me help you protect your most precious resources -- time, health and energy -- while connecting with like-minds and a supportive community that will have you feeling recharged.

How will our relationship be different than relationships I have with friends/loved ones?

Our relationship may feel similar to that of a trusted loved one, in that you will feel secure in sharing your thoughts and experiences and being your genuine self. The difference lies in my ability to reflect back, notice blind-spots and limiting patterns without judgment, offering interpretation and potential solutions when appropriate. Having a strong support system is SO important, but even the healthiest relationships can't replace the objectivity, dependability and grounding provided by an attuned clinician.

Do you assign homework, activities, or readings for me to do between sessions? Why or why not?

I have a secret curated Client Library with tons of resources for diving deeper. Resources are shared on a case by case basis, based on client preference, learning style and issue being worked on. Resources are typically used most often in the beginning of our work until the skills and processes become long-term habits.

Is there ever a time when you would encourage me to leave or graduate? Or how do I know when it's time to end or move on, or time to stay and explore more?

My role is to help you become the most empowered version of yourself, building effective coping skills that you can rely on for years to come. In the beginning of our work, we will assess what goals you'd like therapy to help you achieve. These goals may be revised and new ones added until you're comfortable relying on your own instincts and needing less support from me. Typically my clients reduce the frequency of sessions before deciding if they'd like to graduate or pause sessions. If therapy isn't achieving what we hoped, we will collaborate to determine what treatment options may better suit your needs and preferences.
