Get to Know Alyssa

"Alyssa is understanding and insightful. The exercises she came up with helped us better understand the differences in our communication style as well as our values, and how to work through those differences. She knows how to get to the root of the issue and ask the hard questions. I cannot recommend Alyssa enough."

SD, Client

How do you approach diversity in the room or working with clients who may come from a different background than you?

I welcome diversity and the fact that our lives are different. I think that's what makes sessions enriching; when we bring our separate life expertise into a conversation and form connections. I'd like to learn more about your upbringing, culture, values, religion, etc. while working to find parallels where we can bond and grow from together in order to help you understand your best self.

What is the best part of the work for you?

I find that I learn so much from working with clients from different walks of life. The more I work with clients with different backgrounds and issues, the more I'm able to build upon my worldview and formulate my approaches based on shared experiences. It also helps me reflect on myself, my values, and what kind of practitioner I want to be. It's like adding to a never ending database!

How participatory are you during sessions?

While I provide the space for my clients to share their experiences and vent, I often probe and ask a lot of questions that will challenge my clients to take a step further and reflect on the behaviors and changes in their lives. Questions can range from "where do you think this is coming from" or "what are things you can do about this" may often come up in our conversations to stimulate change and reflection for my clients.
