Message from Melissa

Being a woman in America in 2024 is not easy. A mentor of mine once said that she did not envy my experience as a woman today. She grew up in a different time, a time when she was expected to be a good mother for her children and a responsible homemaker for her husband. Today, beyond these roles, there is a subtle, quiet undercurrent of expectations including, but by no means limited to, being a “good” wife, sister, friend, and neighbor (what does “good” mean anyway?), a career woman, an impromptu party host with a meticulous home (cook, housekeeper, etc.), and a selfless volunteer in the community, all while maintaining a size 2 figure. How can we possibly manage all this and more? What expectations do we have of ourselves? What boundaries do we enforce? These are some of the many questions we can explore as we consider your place in today’s world. Call or email me today to schedule a free 20-minute consultation.

Get to Know Melissa

How participatory are you during sessions?

I am not a directive therapist. My approach is based on the belief is that you know what you wish to work on and what would be most helpful for you to explore. By allowing you to start the session, it eliminates the possibility of me asking you about something you may have already resolved or simply do not wish to speak of. This ensures that I am respectful of how you wish to spend our time together.

Have you received any particular training beyond your post-Bachelor's training?

I completed my traineeship and internship at Open Paths Counseling Center where I studied psychodynamic psychotherapy, LGBTQIA concerns, and trauma (I completed a six month trauma intensive). I worked in a group practice whose primary clientele was sex addicts and betrayed partners and completed Certified Sex Addiction Specialist (CSAT) training levels 1 & 2. In 2019, I completed the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) certification through the Humanitarian Assistance Program and the Intensive Grief Training at Our House. I have significant experience working with disordered eating, and approach this work using the Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating Models.

How much do you share about yourself during our time together and why?

I share very little about myself. The therapeutic relationship is a unique one, one that is all about you. However, I will self disclose if I believe there will be therapeutic value to you.
